Curriculum Vitae

 

Dr. Fran Pierce is the Director of the Center for Precision Agricultural Systems (CPAS) and a professor in the Departments of Crop and Soil Sciences and Biological Systems Engineering at Washington State University. He received his Ph.D. in Soil Science from the University of Minnesota in 1984. Prior to his arrival at WSU in September 2000, he was a professor of soil science at Michigan State University where his research focused on soil management, with emphasis on the development and evaluation of conservation tillage systems and precision agriculture.  His has edited and co-authored numerous publications on precision agriculture including the ASA book The State of Site-Specific Management for Agriculture and an invited review of aspects of precision agriculture in Advances in Agronomy. He is currently the series editor for the CRC Press book series GIS Applications for Agriculture, with the first volume published in 2007.  He guided and developed AgWeatherNet, a statewide weather network in Washington State. His current research focus is on assessing and managing variability in irrigated cropping systems, the development and implementation of sensors and wireless sensor networks, remote monitoring and control, and assessing management impacts on soil quality, including biomass removal for energy.
