Deployment of CPAS wireless sensor network in a V-trellis apple orchard near Prosser, WA. |
Researchers at the WSU Center for Precision Agricultural Systems (CPAS) have developed two wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for agriculture in Washington State - one designed for regional-scale applications, such as weather networks, and the other designed for on-farm applications, such as temperature monitoring for frost protection. Their objective was to create regional and on-farm sensor networks that provide remote, real-time monitoring and/or control of important farming operations that add value through improved efficiency of targeted management practices for high quality food production and processing.
Both WSN applications were successfully implemented in the intended applications of AgWeatherNet and AgFrostNet, respectively. This software was designed specifically for air temperature monitoring during frost/freeze protection events. However, both WSN systems were implemented in other applications demonstrating the wide range of uses for WSN in agriculture, e.g., this same technology can be modified for use in other applications that monitor soil moisture, soil temperature, and control other agricultural operations. In addition, both systems have been made commercially available to growers through a novel arrangement between WSU and a local manufacturer. Growers have purchased these systems and are eager to expand their capabilities in their farming operation.
