Research Areas at CPAS

CPAS research focuses on five major research and development areas:

Assessing and Managing Spatial and Temporal Variability in Cropping Systems

Precision agriculture is based on improving the management of cropping systems using information on the spatial and temporal variability that occurs in the climate, soils, and plants.

Remote Sensing/GIS

Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems are important tools for quantifying and monitoring spatial and temporal variability in cropping systems.  CPAS has developed new capabilities and applied these technologies in our research projects.

Sensors and Wireless Sensor Networks

CPAS is developing, integrating and evaluating technologies to facilitate acquisition of non-destructive high spatial and temporal resolution data.

Automation

Automation for crop production is needed to improve precision in the timing and application of treatments, and to reduce human labor.  CPAS has developed a precision irrigation system:

Biomass for Biofuels

Biofuels may drastically change the agricultural landscape in WA state.  CPAS is involved in research on the impacts of crops grown for cellulose based fuels
