AgFrostNet

Real-time collection of temperature information can helpgrowers respond quickly to changes in temperature that might adversely affect their crops. This new application of wireless telemetry, with the ability to automate data collection for almost immediate use by growers, has great promise for Washington State agriculture.
The agriculture landscape in eastern Washington State can suffer damage from frost. Thus, most fruit growers have some form of frost protection (e.g., heating, irrigation, or air mixing) to prevent frost or freeze damage to their crops. Many farmers use all three methods and vary their use depending on the type of weather encountered. Yet all of these systems are costly and require huge investments of labor. Thus, the goal of developing the AgFrostNet system was to assist growers by creating an affordable system that would provide real-time information about air temperature and allow them to more efficiently manage high-value fruit crops in Washington State.
The AgFrostNet system is currently available to growers. Researchers at the WSU CPAS facility continue to improve the system and expand its use to other areas.
