Center for Precision Agricultural Systems
|
To be competitive in a global market and sustainable in a world with increasingly limited natural resources, agriculture must increase the efficiency and efficacy of its production and food processing systems. In 1999, the Washington State Legislature recognized the importance of technology in removing barriers facing Washington agriculture by funding the Washington State University Center for Precision Agricultural Systems (CPAS). The Center is located in Prosser, Washington, at the WSU Prosser Irrigated Agriculture Research & Extension Center (IAREC).
The mission of CPAS is to advance the science and practice of precision agriculture in Washington State and beyond by developing technologies and management practices that improve crop quality while increasing production efficiency and protecting the environment. To that end, CPAS works with scientists and educators from WSU and around the nation to develop the principles, practices, and technologies of precision agriculture for the broad range of crops grown in Washington State.
Currently, CPAS focuses on five major research and development areas applied to cropping systems in Washington State:
- Assessing and Managing Spatial and Temporal Variability
- New Remote Sensing/GIS Applications
- Sensors and Wireless Sensor Networks
- Automation
- Biomass for Biofuels
What is precision agriculture?
Precision agriculture is the most recent name given to an old theory – applying technology to the way we manage agricultural production. New use of information technologies like remote sensing, soil sampling, and information management tools will help improve agricultural methods and optimize production.
